Why I Love My Job: Story from a New York City Hypnotist (Repost)

(This is a repost from our previous blog and first went live in December 2012)
I love my job. How many people get to say that? I truly, truly love my job because every single day, I get to witness someone improving her or his life.
I have a handful of clients who started with me back in June and have come in for a session every two weeks or so. In the last 7 months, every single one of them has transformed before my eyes. In anywhere from 6 – 14 sessions they have TRANSFORMED their bodies, their minds, and their relationship to everything external. It is truly the most beautiful thing to behold. I am so lucky that I get to see the fruits of our labor, and so quickly! I have come to love every single long-term client as I see them blossoming. As an additional bonus, my faith in humanity is strengthened as I see them going out into the world and inspiring others to do what they have done.
To illustrate this beautiful process, I’ll share with you the typical experience for a long-term client. While all client information is strictly confidential, I’ll take the average of a few real experiences and represent them with a fictional client named, Maria.
Session 1: Maria comes in with a combination of fatigue, depression, a weight loss goal, and confusion about her purpose in life. She begins timidly telling me that she hasn’t accomplished as much as she wanted to at her age, she has put on weight in the past few years and can’t seem to shake it, her relationships are deteriorating, and while she desperately wants to improve her life, she’s lacking motivation to do anything differently.
We work together to prioritize her needs and I ask her a few more questions about the topic we’ve chosen to work on first. Maria has a pretty good idea of what to expect from hypnosis (those who don’t can check out this video to learn more) and yet she’s still noticeably nervous about the process. “I’m not used to being out of control,” she says. I take some time to explain the process to her in detail, including the fact that hypnosis is nothing like what you see in the movies and that she will be in control the entire time. We have a great first session! Afterwards, Maria says she feels extremely relaxed and that she couldn’t believe the answers she gave, or the memories she was able to return to. They were so profound and different from what she would have said during a normal conversation. She also says “BUT, my mind was going the whole time, I could hear myself thinking, so I’m not sure if it worked”. I assure her it did, remind her of what we discussed during the pre-talk about why that happens, and give her a hug on the way out.
Session 2: Maria gives me a little hug hello and sits down on the couch, noticeably more relaxed than last week. She begins to tell me what amazing things happened since she last saw me. “I ordered a chicken club with cheese the day after I left last week and was so mad because I didn’t think it was working, but THEN I chewed every bite a million times, naturally stopped eating when I was full, took the stairs instead of the elevator at work and already lost 2lbs!” I say, that’s wonderful! Just out of curiosity, did you practice taking deep breaths and saying the mantra before you ordered your food? Maria responds,“…No, actually I didn’t.” Well, I say, that’s why it’s important to have the conscious mind (the one that you “hear thinking”) present during the session. Your subconscious mind can’t order your lunch. You have to consciously do the work as well. Next time really take the deep breaths, say the mantra silently to yourself and see what you order. We then have another amazing hypnotherapy session and now that Maria more clearly understands how the conscious and subconscious minds need to work together, she leaves with even greater confidence.
By the third session Maria gives me a big hug hello, gets cozy on the couch and starts telling me about all of the improvements in her life, both within the topic we’re working on, and elsewhere. The weight is melting off, her motivation is increasing, she likes the city better, she is getting closer with people at work, she doesn’t like chicken clubs anymore, she craves salads, and the list goes on!
By approximately the sixth session, Maria has transformed! She’s been promoted, she met someone she really likes at a meditation class she enrolled in, she replaced going out drinking every night with yoga and salsa classes. She’s sending me emails to update me on her progress, pictures of her cute trainer at the gym, and includes links to inspirational articles she’s been reading. By then she’s ready to move on to the next area of her life she’d like to further improve upon.
The most amazing part is, this is not an exaggeration!! Just take a look at our testimonials and yelp reviews! Every day I am in greater awe of the power of hypnosis. Within a handful of sessions my clients have any combination of the following: new jobs, new partners, new bodies, new friends, more money, more joy, and control over their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I’ll say it again because I’m not sure how else to put it – this process is so beautiful to behold!
I’ve seen women walk in here broken and leave stronger than they ever imagined they could be. I’ve seen men in their 50’s & 60’s overcome their insomnia and feelings of unworthiness related to losing their jobs and money in recent years. I’ve seen client after client come in with IBS and chronic undiagnosed pain, leave with a healthy body, clear mind, and usually, with a new job or career.
There are so many beautiful and amazing parallels between my clients. I wish I could tell them about it! While I’m the only one who has access to the specifics of both my clients’ initial suffering and profound healing, I CAN tell you that you are not alone. However you feel, whatever you’re going through, you’re not alone. There are hundreds more just like you that I’ve already met, worked with, and have seen change their lives in a few short weeks or months. There are thousands more I have yet to meet who I’m sure will do the same.
The beauty of hypnosis is that you heal yourself. I’m just the lucky one who gets to be there to guide you through the fascinating maze of your subconscious.
To my brilliant, incredible clients: Thank you for giving me the tremendous honor of being able to watch you change your lives. I love you and am SO PROUD OF YOU!
To everyone else: Thank you for reading! And I look forward to working with you when you’re finally fed up and ready to improve your life forever.
